A message to your school skiing community…

It is our great pleasure to invite your school to participate in the 2019 National Alpine Junior School Championships on Saturday 21st September at Coronet Peak.

New on the race calendar this year, the National Alpine Junior School Championships offers students the opportunity to represent their school in the field of alpine ski racing.

Students who meet the requirements are welcome to participate in the competition which will be an excellent platform for them to showcase their skills while carrying their school flag.

The National Alpine Junior School Championships is an interschool competition open to Year 5 – 8 students throughout New Zealand. Skiers compete as part of a team comprising of no more than 5 skiers (the minimum team size is 3 skiers) who will compete in the age categories below. Schools from all around New Zealand are encouraged to enter this event.

Each Competitor in the team must enter in one of the following categories:

  • Year 5 & 6 Boys
  • Year 5 & 6 Girls
  • Year 7 & 8 Boys
  • Year 7 & 8 Girls

Schools who are unable to field a team of 3 competitors may enter a lessor number and those individuals will be combined with individuals from other schools to make up a full team.

NOTE: Where there is a regional schools ski race the school MUST compete in that race to be eligible to enter.

Regional competitions include - Turoa | Bay of Plenty School Ski Races, Mt Dobson | Aoraki School Champs, Cheeseman | Canterbury Primary and Intermediate Schools, Turoa | Waikato Schools Races, Whakapapa | NIPS, Coronet Peak | Battle of the Basin, Turoa | North Island Secondary School Champs, Rainbow | Solander Primary and Intermediate Schools, Cardrona | Upper Clutha Primary School Champs

There will be two runs for all competitors and times from the blue course and red course will be combined. Skiers will not be seeded. Points are awarded separately for boys and girls in each category. Time is calculated from the fastest to the slowest with any did-not finish (DNF) being included in the total number of competitors. The total number of competitors in each division, shall be divided into 20 equal groups, insofar as that is possible; thereby creating the number/group of skiers to be awarded 20 points, 19-points, 18-points; and so on down to 1-point. Final team placings are calculated based on the total of the 4 highest scoring team members. To be competitive we recommend entering a team of 5 as your best four competitors will be counted for the overall team trophy.
