Event Description

The National Alpine Junior School Skiing Championships is an interschool ski competition open to Year 5-8 students throughout New Zealand. Skiers compete as part of a team comprising of no more than 5 skiers (the minimum team team size is 3 skiers). Schools may enter as many teams (boys, girls or mixed) as they wish, providing they meet the entry criteria below. Schools from all around New Zealand are encouraged to enter this event.

The Event is officially sanctioned by SnowSports New Zealand and will be run in accordance with its rules.

Date

Saturday 21st September 2019

Note: a dual slalom Interfield dual slalom race is held at Remarkables ski area on Sunday 22nd of September. All competitors are encouraged to enter this race as well via the SnowSports New Zealand website.

In the unlikely event that the race is unable to be run on the Saturday due to weather conditions, it will be incorporated into the interfield event on the Sunday.

Venue

The race will be held at Coronet Peak Ski Area on the Shirt Front trail. The race will be easily visible from the Coronet Peak base lodge deck for skiers and non-skiers alike.

Event Format

Timed Dual Slalom

Age Categories: Yr5/6 Girls, Yr5/6 Boys, Yr7/8 Girls, Yr7/8 Boys

Each competitor will receive a timed run on the red course and the blue course. The combination of both times will be used for placings.

Seeding: There will be no seedings of entrants. All competitors will be randomly assigned start positions within their age groups. The order of start will be: Yr5/6 Girls, Yr5/6 Boys, Yr7/8 Girls, Yr7/8 Boys. The race order for the second run will be the same as the first run.

Points

Points are awarded separately in each age category.  The total number of competitors in each each age category will be ranked based on their combined times (including DNFs) and then divided into 20 equal groups. The groups will be awarded points from 20 points for the fastest group, 19-points, 18-points; and so on down to 1-point.

Team Results: Team scores will be based on the points total of their top 4 skiers. In the event that a team has fewer than 4 skiers the total of their remaining skiers points will be used.
All teams will be ranked based on these total points and awards given to the top 3 placed teams. The top team will earn the title of National Alpine Junior School Ski Champions.
Individual Results: Individual awards will be given to the top 3 skiers in each age category based on their combined times.

 

Prizegiving

Awards and Trophies: Prizegiving will take place on Sunday 22 September following the interfield ski race (details tbc).

Prize Giving: Sunday 22nd September following Remarkables Interfield Race

Volunteers

Each school is required to nominate one adult as a race volunteer, separate from the Team Manager. Volunteer requirements will be confirmed at the Team Managers meeting, day prior.
